Cavity Nesting Birds
Better logging practices are helping more birds survive in the Mount Hood National Forest. Many birds nest inside dead trees, which loggers now leave behind. Northern flickers and hairy woodpeckers excavate cavities in the wood that they use for a season, and then abandon, to the benefit of other birds.

Zumwalt Prairie
The Zumwalt Prairie Preserve is the largest purchase made by the Nature Conservancy in Oregon. This rolling prairie is a fragile ecosystem home to fifteen species of raptors, like the Red Tail Hawk and Short Eared Owl. Ecologists like Dennis Sheehy study the effects of a hundred years of homesteading and cattle grazing to determine how best to manage these delicate grasslands.

Hydroelectric dams are a dangerous obstacle for young salmon on their way downriver. New technology allows scientists to send a computerized probe called a sensor fish through the turbulent route followed by salmon through the dam. The hope is to learn ways to minimize fish mortality.
