- Invading species such as the mitten crab are hitchhiking around the globe on ocean-going cargo ships before landing in Oregon and seriously impacting the native environment. The creatures get picked up in the ballast water that is key to the stabilization and navigation of these giant vessels. In an effort to stop future invasions, aquatic ecologist Mark Sytsma, heads a program to test cargo ships visiting the Columbia River.
