Ankeny Alley Update

Think Out Loud produced a show about shaping the future of Old Town/Chinatown on March 30. One of our guests was Dustin Knox, owner of Central, a speakeasy-style bar and crepe shop at 220 S.W. Ankeny.

While on our show, Knox discussed his vision for closing off Ankeny Alley to cars through the summer and fall months. The alley is on Southwest Ankeny Street between Second and Third avenues. Knox, John Papaloannou, owner of Berbati's Pan and Restaurant, and other area business owners have spoken out in favor of this plan. Their hope is to create the look and feel of a European-style paseo in the alley.

Despite support from the transportation authoriy, the pilot project stalled until at least July. It was scheduled to open as a pedestrian-friendly walkway on June 21.The setback arose when Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz and advocates for the homeless raised questions about whether nonpaying customer would still have access to seating.

The plan awaits City Council approval.
