Ashes to Ashes and Fat to Fat?
We had a really interesting conversation after today's Final Footprints show. I should hasten to add that I really enjoyed the on-air part, too, but some things just don't fit into an hour. Among them:
Cynthia Beal, who owns the Natural Burial Company, explained that, on the whole, Americans are overweight, which can cause all kinds of health issues in life. It turns out the problems don't end when we take our last breath. Bones and proteins and all the rest of the stuff that holds us together are all broken down relatively well by the critters in the dirt, but fat is the exception. And as the bodies we leave behind get fatter, they stay around for longer, albeit in a slightly modified form. The result, said Cynthia, is waxy corpses. Scott Logan from Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary just nodded.
