First Dispensary Prosecution in Oregon

Earlier this summer, we spoke with U.S. Attorney for Oregon Dwight Holton about a letter he sent out to private marijuana clubs. The letter indicated that the clubs were illegal. The clubs make pot available to members with medical marijuana cards. And while they do not accept payment for the drug, they do charge membership fees and ask for reimbursement to cover grower expenses. Holton said he sent the letters to the clubs and their landlords because what they are doing is illegal under federal law and he considers their businesses possible fronts for drug trafficking organizations. He says they are operating as dispensaries, which are not legal under Oregon state law.

This week, Kathleen Cambron, the owner of Wake 'n Bake Cannabis Lounge in Aloha, plead guilty to two felony drug charges and was sentenced to three years probation. It's the first time a marijuana club owner has been prosecuted on criminal charges in Oregon. As part of her probation, Cambron — who is a medical marijuana patient — can no longer be enrolled in Oregon's medical marijuana program.
