Graphic Novel Ideas
We got a very practical question from "DreamTheEndless" during our Graphic Novels show yesterday:
- What one graphic novel do you think is the best one to give to someone who is unfamiliar with the genre? (Someone who has never been a comic book reader or a graphic novel reader.)
So I asked our guests.
James Lucas Jones of Oni Press took immediate issue with the question, reminding us that comics are a medium, not a genre, and as such no one graphic novel appeals to everybody. As an example, he said, Scott Pilgrim is their most popular work right now, but for his father, a crime fiction fan, he's recommend Whiteout or 100 Bullets.
Douglas Wolk, author of Reading Comics, agreed, suggesting that you take that special someone to a bookstore and let them see what jumps out.
But graphic artist Mike Allred played along, and offered two general interest, gateway-drug graphic novels: Blankets, an "intimate and epic and very pure piece of work," and Bone. And a third, for those of you who like superheros: Watchmen.
Happy reading!
