January 12 Week & MLK Special
After a few weeks of holiday and weather craziness we are finally back into the swing of lots of live shows. Well, sort of. We had a full roster of programming planned for next week and then discovered that events in Washington might just change our plans. Next week OPB Radio will broadcast gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Senate confirmation hearings for Secretary of State on Tuesday and Attorney General and Secretary of Treasury on Thursday. So, on Tuesday we'll have a Think Out Loud show if their lunch break coincides with the time of our show. And on Thursday special coverage will continue all day, with no break -- not even for us! It is a big week of national news, and no doubt some very exciting and important hearings, so I hope you enjoy them. Meanwhile here's what to expect on Think Out Loud:
Monday: Congress is in session -- what's our delegation up to? OPB reporter April Baer will let us know. Then we'll get into a discussion about the 200,000 acres of Oregon land that are likely to be deemed as wilderness under a new Senate bill. What can you -- what should you -- be able to do in "wilderness"?
Tuesday: If timing is such that we have a show, we'll be there to react to Hillary Clinton's Secretary of State nomination hearing. We'll provide the Northwest view of this big appointment and open the phone lines to hear your thoughts.
Wednesday: Oregon's 75th Legislative Assembly convenes this week. We'll talk to state legislators, lobbyists, and analysts to find out what to expect in Salem this year.
Thursday: No Think Out Loud today, but please tune in to hear the nomination hearings for Attorney General and Secretary of Treasury.
Friday: Music for the soul -- what do you play when you're sad, or joyful, or in need of inspiration? We'll explore the soundtracks of peoples lives. What's yours?
And one more note, I'll be spending much of next week working on our MLK Day special. In 2009 Martin Luther King Day is the day before Barack Obama's inauguration as the first black president of the United States. To mark this historic moment, we're planning a special show in front of a live studio audience at OPB's Portland studio on Monday January 19th, from 9 to 10 am. We'll explore the legacy of Dr. King and ask Oregonians to reflect on their hopes and dreams for the next president, along with their concerns for the next four years. How far have we come since Dr. King shared his dream of a nation where people are judged by the "content of their character"? We hope you can join the studio audience. Seating is first-come, first-seated and doors open at 8 am. The show is live from 9 to 10 am. More details are coming soon.
