A Job and a Death

First, the job. Sharon Hoyer mentioned on our homeless families show last week that she was waiting to find out if her husband Gary got a job at Albertson's. He did! He was hired for a three-nights-a-week shift stocking shelves for $9.70 an hour.

Then a death. Yesterday morning, Gary's father passed away after a long fight with cancer. The family doesn't have money to go from Bend to Austin, Texas for the the funeral. And now that Gary has a new job, he can't take time off anyway.

Sharon takes comfort saying the people who matter know Gary wants to be there.

Another guest from the same program, Daniel Shrum, got close to a job. A woman called him last week after hearing of his family's situation. She had a possible job managing apartments, but it didn't work out.

Now Daniel is fervently hoping that his wife can finish the last test to get her Certified Nurse's Assistant license and get a job before their time at the shelter runs out in five weeks.
