Join us in La Grande and Pendleton

We're heading on the road to Eastern Oregon! On Monday, May 11 we will be in La Grande, recording a special broadcast in front of a live audience at Eastern Oregon University. On Tuesday we'll head over to Pendleton to record a show at the Pendleton Center for the Arts. If you live in (or near) either of these communities, we'd love to have you in the audience. Both events are open to the general public and seating will be first-come, first-seated. No need to reserve a spot! A few more details:

Monday May 11th in La Grande: How does a rural community face the challenge of a world-wide economic crisis? The area around La Grande is more diversified than many rural communities — with people employed in timber, agriculture, education, government, and manufacturing — but it's still feeling the pain of the recession. Eastern Oregon University is facing a massive state shortfall. Boise Cascade has laid off over 200 people. And Terry Trailer has shut its doors completely. With an unemployment rate over 14 percent, how does a rural community face the challenge of a global economic crisis? How will the recession change La Grande?

Location: Zabel Hall at Eastern Oregon University

Schedule: Doors open at 6 pm; show begins at 7 pm; post-show reception at 8 pm.

Tuesday May 12th in Pendleton:  How important is a vital downtown to a rural community? Pendleton is one of many rural communities looking to downtown revitalization as a key to successful economic development. But as the recession forces businesses to cut back and sends workers to unemployment lines, should central city beautification and livability be a priority? We'll look at the realities of Pendleton's changing downtown and explore what role it plays in the larger community.

Location: Pendleton Center for the Arts

Schedule: Doors open at 6 pm; Show at 7 pm; Post-show reception at 8 pm.

If you have any questions feel free to post them here. Otherwise we'll just hope to see you in Eastern Oregon!

A problem seldom discussed, but always present, is the exclusive atmosphere exhibited by old, rural communities such as Pendleton. People who do not have roots, i.e. generational relatives, in the area are referred to as "newcomers" and the assumption is that those people will not stay. Many people I know are considered "newcomers" when they have, in fact, lived in Pendleton for 30 or more years. Ideas about revitalization from "newcomers" are discounted by members of the established order. Therefore, many disenfranchised residents do relocate to more inclusive communities. Others, including businesses, do not choose to locate in this type of environment. Some of the economic set back experienced by the town in this millenium is due to this exclusive, parochial mind-set. Outreach and a "friendly" welcoming attitude toward all, with less suspiciousness from the Round-Up clique, would be extremely helpful. And it wouldn't cost a dime.
