July Ideas

You ask, we deliver.

A number of folks over the last few months have asked why we don't have a place to suggest show ideas. You do now.

Starting today, we'll put up a "Suggest a Show" post each month. This is your place to point us in the direction of good guests, juicy topics, feisty conversations, and books or articles or news events that might turn into shows.

We can't promise that we'll respond to each suggestion -- in fact I'm pretty sure we won't be able to -- but we're going to take each one seriously.

Have at it!

I suspect you will see a few from me on this thread, but just one for now...

Extend an invitation to both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain. Both have said they will swing through, invite them through their local campaigns to be on. No, I don?t expect them both to be on at the same time, but considering that each has been trying to ?reach out? to voters through pseudo town-hall events, you might actually get them on. You could also try with the alternative candidates if/when they come through.

You could extend this a bit and offer to have the Senate candidates also.

Make them unbalanced shows that become a chance to interact with them as individuals. We know what they say on the stump, lets see what they say when we have our unscripted questioners.
There is a plethora of compelling environmental issues that would make for engaging programming in the same vein as your excellent program on LNG earlier this year:

-the Columbia River Crossing
-salmon and dams
-water wars
-Portland harbor clean-up
-discussion of why Oregon continues to tolerate the ridiculously outmoded process by which PGE combusts coal at its Boardman power plant, absent modern pollution controls
-speaking of burning coal, how about focusing on Oregon's global warming commitments
-the much-needed and rapidly evolving transition to wind and solar power
-spotlight the successes and shortcomings of Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality
I would very much like to hear a discussion on the impact "political correctness" on the lack of open and honest discussion in the public square. My personal experience indicates large numbers of people only verbalize their heart felt deespest beliefs, if ever, among their closses and likeminded family and friends who frequently share such feelings and beliefs. This, I believe, contributes to a lack of learning and evolution of our thoughts and feelings on a wide range of social and political issues. For example, I was a very strong supporter of Al Gore presidential campaign. I learned a great deal in my visits to Lack Oswego and Clackamas County talking to Republicians to understand why they were opposed to Al Gore. It was not only very educational but enjoyable as well. For the record, I have been an independent for the vast majority of my adult life after having been a democrate and a republican. Or is it not politically correct to talk about political correctness ?
I thought this was interesting, because in a lot of ways "political correctness" seems like an old-fashioned phrase now -- more 90's than 00's. Can you give me a sense for how exactly it affects social or political dialogue these days? What are you less likely to talk about in public? What do you think others are? And where does this self-censorship come from?

I like it.

I suspect MM will be back... if not, though, I can think of several directions on this one.
I would like to see a show about vacation laws. In Europe, most employees receive 4 weeks paid vacation. Should we have a law mandating 3 weeks paid vacation? There is an organization "Take Back your Time" which advocates this. They just did a poll of 1000 people and the poll found 69% of Americans saying they would support a paid vacation law.

I can see that businesses would be against it........but it seems like such an obvious issue that most Americans would want, and yet the law does not seem likely.

It is said by the French that the French work to live and Americans live to work.

I like the French idea myself.
I'd like to hear a show with current information about alternative energy in Oregon including discussion with people who are utilizing solar, wind, etc and their experiences. Experts from Energy Trust of Oregon to talk about rebates and tax credits, contractors who do installations, engineers working on new solutions, local reps from industries building components for systems could all provide lots of information. That could be an exciting discussion. Thanks!

Peak Oil has major implications for our society. The likely decline in global oil production in the very near future will have massive repercussions.

I suggest John Kauffman of the Oregon Dept of Energy for the lead guest of the show. You might also contact Roscoe Bartlett, U.S. Congressman.
On Friday July 25, 2008, at 10:00 the US House of Representatives is having a hearing on the Impeachment of President Bush et.al. However, there is practically no coverage of this issue by any of the major media outlets, including OPB. I think that Impeachment of Bush, Cheney, et. al. is the only way America can reestablish some respect internationally and the only way American citizens can regain respect for the office of the President. This is by far the most important political issue we are facing at the moment, and it is worthy of discussion on Think Out Loud. Thanks,~Stuart
Wow! About time. Thanks for the information. Is that Eastern or Pacific time? Will it be on one of the CSPANs?

I think the best thing to do is impeach and try Bush and Cheney, sentence them to life without parole and then extradite them to Iraq and let the Iraqi people try them. That would bring the US back into the worlds good graces and sense of justice and prove that our system of government is a good system.
Hello -

Olympic Cellars Winery, located on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, has reached agreement with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) regarding the commercial use of its business name and the framework under which it can continue to operate.

The agreement came nine months after the winery received the USOC?s first letter citing it for violation of the 1998 Ted Stevens Act, which provides the USOC with exclusive commercial control of the word ?Olympic.?

Attached is an opinion piece written by winery owner Kathy Charlton, which I feel would spark an interesting discussion.

Thank you,

I think there is a show in the story of Barbara Wagner ( http://www.katu.com/news/26119539.html ). Even if I don?t think we can afford every new drug for health care under our current health care system, I definitely see a disturbing trend to devalue this woman?s life in our state?s response that while we won?t take on responsibility for this drug, the plan would cover ?physician aid in dying?... I have to wonder how many others have gotten letters like this and felt all the more alone and isolated?

Washington, are you listening to this? You have a ballot initiative and vulnerable populations too...
Hi there- I'd like to see some shows on:

1. Economic "clusters" (Oregon has some exciting clusters!)
2. The value of knowing a foreign language (I know there are some great benefits, but what exactly are they?)
3. Wave power as an alternate energy source
4. Oregon's economic future and how we can prepare Oregon kids for it

Cheers!
Rick C.

2. The value of knowing a foreign language (I know there are some great benefits, but what exactly are they?)

Rick, you read our mind. We're working on this right now -- with a focus on Mandarin. Look for it next week.
