On Bottle Songs and Jokes
The secret star of today's Bottle Bill show was multi-talented engineer Steven Kray -- the man behind this dramatization (MP3) of the Richard Chambers story. (For a less dramatized but no less dramatic version, check out the original in Brent Walth's book Fire At Eden's Gate.)
Steven also chose some thematic break music that only the most discerning music geeks out there could possibly have picked out from their few seconds in the clear. There was "Cola Bottle Baby" by Edwin Birdsong and "The Bottle" by Gil Scott-Heron:
We also got an interesting call just at the end of the show -- too late to make in on the air. It was a joke that somehow combined many of the the elements we'd talked about in the hour. Julie regaled us in our post show meeting:
A Texan, a Californian, and an Oregonian are sitting around a campfire. The Texan takes a swig of tequila, throws his bottle in the air, draws a gun, and shoots the bottle. The Californian is surprised. "Why did you do that?" he asks. "Where I come from there's plenty of tequila," the Texan responds.
Then the Californian takes out a bottle of Napa cabernet. He pours a glass, takes a sip, tosses his bottle into the air... and shoots it into pieces. The Texan asks, "Why'd you do that?" "Where I come from we've got plenty of cabernet," the Californian replies.
Then the Oregonian takes out a bottle of Henry Weinhard's. He downs it in one go, throws the bottle in the air, shoots the Californian, and catches the bottle before it hits the ground. The Texan is taken aback. "Why'd you do that?" he asks. "Well," the Oregonian responds, "where I come from there are plenty of Californians... but this bottle is worth five cents."
I hasten to add that California -- which has given the world so much! -- is now ahead of Oregon in its bottle laws.

A new bottle bill will have no impact unless it is enforced. The OLCC is chartered with enforcing the current bottle bill, but they do not enforce it. Hollywood video sells soft drinks, but does not charge a deposit, nor do they accept bottle returns (I worked there). I tried for 8 months to get the OLCC to enforce the bill with Hollywood Video ... the final response from the OLCC was "Hollywood Video says that it would be too costly for them to participate".
