One Last Convention Conversation: Donald Miller
I'm back in the Portland sun after one week of mile-high fever and another week of Minnesota nice.
If you're jonesing for more convention coverage, you can listen to a conversation I had in Denver with Christian author Donald Miller of Portland. He sat down at our booth just a few hours before giving the closing prayer on the first night of the Democratic convention.
It was a far-ranging 15 minutes. We talked about his transformation from being a George H. W. Bush-supporting Republican at the 1992 convention in Houston to a Barack Obama-supporting Democrat in Denver ("The Republican Party felt like they had the Evangelical party in their pocket"). About the place of Jesus in a political convention ("I think he should have a voice here"). About abortion ("I would accuse many very conservative evangelicals who have a heart about this issue of being pie-in-the-sky idealists"). And about the difficulties of talking about faith to a "sophisticated" crowd ("I'm not an idiot. I don't believe in Santa Claus any more, and I don't believe in unicorns, but I believe in God").
You can listen to the 14-minute MP3 here.

"You can listen to the 14-minute MP3 here."
Download times on a dial-up connection tend to be far more than broadband or probably the T1 lines you OPB folks enjoy, so is it possible to provide a transcript of the things you don't air that we still paid for?
I am anti-Religion but I am always looking for reasons to respect people of Religion and it reads like I might find some reasons to respect Donald Miller.
Thanks. -
Ah, I wish we could provide transcripts! It would mean that we have many more hands on deck than we actually do. I'm still waiting for voice recognition software to get good enough to make transcripts more or less error free. Until then, I'm afraid you'll have to download or stream.
(And speaking of streaming, once the buffering is done a slow connection shouldn't be too annoying, I think.) -
Thanks, and I've been waiting for good voice recognition software too.

David Miller and Donald Miller.
Say now, the question hanging in the air must be, are you guys related?
Just grinding the mill here. Of life. -
Unrelated, but we do both live in Portland.

Thanks for sharing that. I agree with some of what he said and disagree with other parts. Honestly, I don't see much of a conversation starting on this one, since it will never be on air, so I'll just leave it at that.
Glad you are back safe and sound, Sir.
