Near the end of today's conversation with Virginia Euwer Wolff, when the topic turned to the importance of music to her life and writing, she gave us this fascinating window into the power (and tragedy!) of radio programming:
For many years, I had a wonderful working relationship with OPB and Performance Today. The morning hours are my most fruitful hours.... So when Performance Today went on at nine, and I knew I had those two hours to maximize whatever was in that brain, I wrote several books to Performance Today, and it is in the neighborhood of a personal tragedy to me that Performance Today is no longer brought to us by any radio. OPB and I were intimate friends for those two hours, five mornings a week, and I still am floundering to find a system, find a framework, for the writing.
It wasn't until after the show, as we were gabbing a bit, that she realized the full irony of her statements. TOL, after all, is the replacement for PT's time slot (Here and Now, from WBUR in Boston, aired in the interim). Virginia seemed slightly embarrassed, but we reassured her that no offense was taken. Writing a novel seems hard enough without having your schedule rearranged externally. (Even if, um, that rearrangement eventually leads to me getting a job!)
Anyway, and as a few of you pointed out, it's actually pretty easy to listen to PT streaming live on a variety of stations. I figured the least I could do was help Virginia listen at her preferred time slot. I'll let you know if it works out for her.
For all you other PT fans, you can find a time (and streaming station) that suits you — ideally not when we're providing our daily dose of scintillating talk! — right here.
