The "S" Word (Stimulus)
During today's conversation about Obama's popularity and reactions to the tax cut deal he proposed last week, we heard Greg Leo and Trent Lutz use a certain word that has all but disappeared from the Democratic lexicon in recent months. The "S" word, is what I refer to. "S," as in stimulus. The very essence of the word has become a bone of contention in Congress. Republicans have wielded the word against Obama's tax-cut and spending proposals as synonymous with failure, and Democrats have abandoned the "S" word in their prose. But just how dirty is the word?
Reason Magazine reported that nearly a third of the $787 billion stimulus package, signed into law in February 2009, was assigned to infrastructure projects — from fixing roads and building bridges to weatherizing buildings and upgrading electrical grids. But according to the Wall Street Journal, Federal agencies have paid out only about a third of them as of September.
However, recent statistics show job growth in the private sector, arguably more in 2010 than during George W. Bush's presidency. This suggests success of the stimulus package, which includes hiring temporary workers.
If nothing else, the "S" word certainly does stimulate debate.
