TOL Pick: Audition
We were talking at lunch today about scary movies, apropos of Halloween. I mentioned that my pick for the absolute freakiest, scariest movie of all time is the Japanese horror flick Audition.
I was living in Brooklyn when it came out, about ten years ago. A few of the images have stayed with me, including an insistently ringing telephone, a glistening hypodermic needle, and something (a body?) in a burlap sack.
But what has really stayed with me is what happened after the movie ended. I had gone to the movie by myself on a random weekday night, and I hadn't had any idea what the movie was going to be about. So I was shell-shocked when it ended — and terrified that if I went home I might somehow end up in a burlap sack. As luck would have it, some guy — a complete stranger — seemed to have the same look on his face. We ended up at a nearby bar, nursing beers and not saying much beyond the occasional "Man, that was crazy." After twenty minutes we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.
Maybe you have a stronger constitution than I do. If not, and if my story hasn't dissuaded you, get ready to make friends with a stranger.
