TOL Pick: Joe Frazier

This week marked the passing of Joe Frazier, one the most iconic boxers of all time. There were many great articles and stories that followed in the wake of the news, highlighting his life and the unique and almost symbiotic relationship between Frazier and his greatest rival, Muhammad Ali. Below are bits from some of my favorites.

The opening of the obituary in the New York Times:

Some people mean more together than they do apart, whatever the stage. Churchill and Hitler. Bogart and Bacall. Ali and Frazier. And for all the deserved accolades for Muhammad Ali, I’ve always believed that each at his best, Joe Frazier, who died Monday night at age 67, was the better fighter. And the better man.

A fan, Tyson — not Mike, in case you were wondering — calling into Talk of the Nation at the six minute mark:

I was a twelve-year-old kid, and a friend of a friend knew Joe Frazier... and in the parking lot behind his  restaurant, Joe Frazier shadow-boxed with me. I can remember being absolutely scared to death that one of those punches would land. It was absolutely remarkable.

And a collection of photos from the National Post:
