The Waste Bass

After the show we had a brief conversation, as usual, with our guest — in this case (Capt!) James Cook. What was less usual is that I got to play a bass made out of a trashcan. Here's a pic of Emily and James talking, with me playing Charles Mingus. Er, actually, a painful scale:

Oh, by the way, I had a brain freeze at the top of the show when Emily asked if any of my instruments are handmade. I said no. The answer is: some. My viola and bow were both made by French luthiers a while ago (the viola once belonged to my grandfather, the bow to my grandmother). My new mandolin was made — lovingly? — in a factory in China.
