What Should We Talk About?
The next stop in our rural economy series takes us to Northeastern Oregon. We hope to head there during the week of July 19th — yes, a mere two weeks away! — so we'd love your thoughts of what to talk about. How is the economy in that area changing? What are the new drivers? Where are the new jobs? At least one of these shows will be in front of a live audience, so stay tuned for more details. We'd love to meet you in person too!

We are Northeastern Oregon farmers/ranchers and are deeply involved in the economy of the area due to agriculture being the roots of the community. With the exception of some small isolated areas in the region Agricuture is still the base for the economy. We are concerned about our ability to conitnue to help sustain our communities and our bussinesses in the current ecconomy.
As young poducers in our late 20's we feel that we have a different perspective and challenges that need to be addressed such as the ability to borrow money and to sell our commodities at a profit. We continue to sell our commodities at the same price as my Grandfather. We have the added challenges of higher operating costs and large Real Estate debt. We are progressive and continue to stay on the cutting edge of technology in order to keep at top efficiency.
We are deeply interconnected to the bussinesses in our community they carry us through thin times and we in turn are deeply commited to them. We only employ local residents with the theory that the all the money they make stays in our community.

This is great but still it is a common knowledge that our economic hasn't recovered from economic turbulence over the past years. Apparently, our economic system, is bound to crash at any point when the instantaneous demand for finance at any given time exceeds the real value of the real economy. The current financial crisis in the world at large is a striking example of a virtual economy crashing. In a similar manner, economy renders two different views of the economy. First one came to be the real value of commodities and services in a given economy which corresponds to the real economic growth and production. The second view of the economy would corresponds the imaginary value of stock prices and the accumulation of interest in the banks.
