I answered phones during the local meat show today, and it turns out it's harder than I used to think when I watched the process from the other side of the glass, as the online host. Actually, the answering part went pretty well. It was the putting-people-on-hold-without-hanging-up-on-them part where I really did some damage. I inadvertently dumped calls three times in the course of about 50 minutes, including one guy — Brian — who I hung up on not once but twice. (That's why I followed up with his fois gras questions after the show.)
I think I learned my lesson, and if I'm ever allowed near the phones again I'll show off my battle-honed skills. But if nothing else I definitely gained a new appreciation for the thoughtful and technically dexterous people who handle your calls each morning... without dropping you!
