Bill Blocks New Hookah Bars
An ever-changing bill that would affect how Oregonians smoke in public places passed the Oregon House and Senate Thursday.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Carolyn Tomei (D-Milwaukie), had hoped to shut down hookah lounges and cigar shops completely. After many compromises and amendments, the current bill will only prevent new hookah lounges from opening. It will also grant them the ability to move to mixed-use spaces, a change from the original Oregon Indoor Clean Air Act. After so many drastic changes, Tomei actually voted against the version that passed. Gov. John Kitzhaber has said that he will sign the bill.
Are you a hookah lounge customer? Are you concerned about the health or cultural effects of hookah smoke? Do you own a smoke shop or hookah lounge? How will this new legislation affect you?
