Governor Kitzhaber's new Commission on Public Safety met for a public hearing in Portland on Monday. The seven-member committee is facing a December 15th deadline for making recommendations to the Governor. Before then, it's gathering information and testimony before tackling mammoth challenges (pdf): reforming sentencing and reducing recidivism while ensuring public safety.
The appointed commission is tasked with finding new ways of dealing with offenders, while still respecting the clear public stance on mandatory sentencing.
