It's election night 2010. Tonight we'll bring you the local results from the Northwest as they come in and we want to hear from you. Follow the results on OPB News and let us know your thoughts about the results as they happen.

Guests:

  • Colin Fogarty: Editor for the Northwest News Network
  • Bill Lunch: Chair of the political science department at Oregon State University

Why do you put so much effort into reporting...nothing. It's not yet 8:30pm and I just heard your Dave Miller report the "results" in measure 73, followed by the caveat: With only 10 percent reporting.

This is followed with the insightful, purpose driven question to your experts: What does this mean?

Folks: Here's what it means: We don't know if the measure pased yet. We won't know if the measure passes (or candidates win) until all the votes are counted. Hearing the "score" updated as each box of votes is counted is senseless, as the ONLY number that matters is the final number.

I'd rather hear insights about what we KNOW about turnout; what we KNOW from people on the street; what you KNOW about what made this campaign differnt than previous midterms; what we KNOW about anything. Your updates are about what you DON'T know (but that which you are reading from the SecState's website - great insight!).

The only poll numbers that matter aren't in yet, so quit trying to spin what it means. Sheesh.

With best regards,

It is better then anything on the TV!

Radio - usually - is...

I agree, it's frustrating! But some people really like the moment by moment developments. We read off the Secretary of State's website because that's where the results come in. It's true, you can look at those numbers too! But we'll do it for you if you'd like!

As far as what we KNOW and don't know - turnout was not known at 8 PM. Partial turnout was. Like partial everything, it provides some, but limited information. As far as what else is or isn't known election night, I would suggest very little accurate analysis about what made this election different from other midterms (if it is) can be done until results are in. I like your suggestion about hearing more on election from "people on the street" for an anecdotal sense of what drove voters.

Thanks for the feedback.

Emily
