Governor Kitzhaber recently announced that the Obama administration would be investing $1.9 billion in Oregon's coordinated care system. The money will start flowing in 2013 with a $620 million initial payment. The rest of the money will be invested over a five year period, so long as the system is saving money. The state says the program will end up saving $11 billion.
The coordinated care system is a statewide health system that would center on countywide or citywide Coordinated Care Organizations.
A Coordinated Care Organization is basically a community network of health care providers that will share information and coordinate services to make the overall health care system more efficient. The program will also try to emphasize preventative health care services sometimes even offered at patient's homes as a way to avoid more costly emergency room visits.
