Health Insurance Exchange
Oregon lawmakers passed a bill to establish a Health Insurance Exchange earlier this month. This new entity is under the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and already has an interim executive director and a federal grant to start planning how the exchange will work. On its web page, the OHA says the Oregon Health Insurance Exchange will be
"a central marketplace for individuals, families and small businesses to have access to affordable, quality health care. Under the law, people will be able to sign up for the exchange in October 2013, for coverage to start in 2014. The law is also explicit in that the exchange must be accountable to the public and work for the benefit of the people and businesses that obtain health insurance coverage through it for themselves, their families and their employees."
Each state will have a health insurance exchange under the new national health insurance plan and Oregon is one of a few states that have decided to create their own exchange rather than adopting a federal model.
Have you been following the Health Insurance Exchange as it made its way through the legislature? What are you hoping will change for you when it goes into effect?
