Kids in Crisis
After 14-year-old Yashanee Vaughn disappeared in March, a teenage boy was arrested and charged with her murder even though no body has been found. Since then, Yashanee's friends have poured out their feelings on Facebook and held vigils in her honor.
Last week, Portland teenagers got another shock when another 14-year-old was shot outside Lloyd Center Mall. Shiloh Hampton later died from his wounds. His funeral was Tuesday. Many of Shiloh's classmates at Madison High School also had a connection to Yashanee Vaughn. Students planned a vigil for Shiloh April 20.
What's the best way to help kids deal with trauma such as the death of a peer? Are you a parent? What do you say to your children when someone their own age dies? Do you remember a traumatic event that affected your school community when you were a student?
