A strike of 25 security guards at the Port of Portland was averted Saturday night due to mediated negotiations. The strike would have begun at 6 a.m. Sunday morning, sparking concerns about the economic implications of shutting down three terminals at the port. The guards are local members of the International Longshore Warehouse Union (ILWU).

The dispute hinged on demands for job security and better wages. The new agreement guarantees jobs for the security guards through 2015. Talks have been going on for 17 months.

This was one of several ongoing labor disputes at the Port of Portland, including a dispute concerning the operations of the local grain shipping hub, likely to reach a boiling point this week.
