Primary Conversations: Oregon Races
Oregon's Democratic and Republican primaries have some pretty interesting races this year. In the 1st Congressional District, incumbent David Wu faces challenger David Robinson. And on the Republican side, candidates are lining up to run against the winner. In the 5th District there's a heated race on the GOP side to determine who will face freshman Congressman Kurt Schrader in November.
Then there's the hotly contested state legislative races. In eastern Oregon, for example, Greg Smith has never faced a primary challenge, but this year he's fighting a spirited campaign with former Union County Commissioner, Colleen MacLeod.
And of course, there's the closely watched Gubernatorial race. Next week the Democratic and Republican candidates will join us for a couple of special shows (and you can join the audience too!), but in the meantime we'll get a preview of what to expect.
What races are you watching? Will you vote in the Democratic or Republican primary? Are you following any statewide campaigns? Who are the candidates that impress you? Why?

TheWES line is a prime exampe. If all available right of ways are used this line could bde expanded to Forest Grove, Salem, and Astoria.

David Wu has made some very strong statements about the government of China and US trade policy. Has this done any major damage to him?
-
There was a new timeline announced for the closure of the Boardman power plant. Has this become a significant issue in the Governor or Congrssional races?

I am a candidate to be the Democratic candidate in District 58, the Bob Jenson seat. I agree that I will have a very difficult race if the Republicans nominate Mr. Jenson.
However, if the Republicans nominate Mr. Mathison, I believe that the voters will choose a person who believes that government can play a positive role in the life of the community and who believes that government that is closest to the people can help people work together for the common good.

A race that Portland Metro area people should be keeping an eye on is the race for Chair of the Washington County Commission. This has been dubbed by many as the most important local election in Oregon this primary season. The top contenders, Dick Schouten and Andy Duyck, are both long time serving Washington County Commissioners, and the outcome of this election could drastically change the direction of Washington County and change the way that it works together with Multnomah and Clackamas counties. At the end of this day, this race is one between development interests (Duyck), and balanced growth that leads to a better quality of life in Washington County (Schouten).
