As the summer heat hits unbelievable highs, families across the state are searching for pools and fountains and shade to play in. But some people are also just trying to find lunch to eat and activities to keep their minds — and bodies — active, without having to spend any money. What do families who can't afford camp or daycare or lunch everyday do?
Over the next month we'll share some of our favorite programs with you. And today is an example of that: a rebroadast of a show from last summer called Summer Struggles.
You can read the original post here or begin your comments about things to do for free below. Whether it is summer lunch programs, free events, or reduced-price camps, what do you do to keep your family nourished during these hot summer days?

My daughter (11) complained that she was tired of overscheduled summers but she is very social and I knew she would get bored. (Also, my husband and I each work part time and we need to have some time when she is "covered" during the summer.
Working with my daughter, we selected five of her favorite friends. I contacted their parents and we now have a M-F schedule where my daughter hosts or goes to the house of each of these five friends. (Is it Thursday? it must be Cailin!).
It's worked out better than I'd hoped. She is active, happy and we don't have to think from day to day "What are we going to do today?"

In the Vancouver area - I recommend Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington. They have 2 sites in Vancouver that offer free breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack to any child between 1-18. Also in reference to other comments at the broadcast in 2008, the Boys & Girls Clubs programs are an amazing summer option for a very low cost, only $15 for the whole year.

Basically summer is best time to travel and adventure, spend quality time with your families and friends. Make the most of it Since camping trips on the peak days to go camping on (Fourth of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day) are when everyone goes (because they all have the same idea) can be fraught with the peril of full spots, you want to book ahead of time. There are some websites, like ReserveAmerica, have a database of campsites you can book. The sites can be listed by activities or amenities, so if you're traveling in an RV (that isn't camping, yuppie scum) and you don't even need to get out the credit cards or get payday loans to book spots – but gas money might be something else.

Three years ago we invited Food for Lane County to use our library -Springfield Public Library - as a site for their free summer lunches for kids program. This has proven to be a great partnership. Along with our free and inclusive Summer Reading program, we are able to provide a full opportunity for kids, ages from birth to 18 to get both nutritious food and literacy opportunities. Youth of any economic level are able to participate in both programs.
