Betty Roberts during her 1974 U.S. Senate campaign

Betty Roberts was considered by many as a trailblazer for her legal and political work in Oregon. After a career in teaching, a political life in the Oregon House and Senate, and a run for governor, Roberts became the first female appellate judge in the Oregon Court of Appeals. She left when she was appointed as the first female member of the Oregon Supreme Court. Senator Ron Wyden told The Oregonian that "everytime you turned around Betty Roberts was pioneering." Roberts died on Saturday of pulmonary fibrosis. She was 88.

The Register Guard reports this about Roberts:

those who knew her say her most important legacy resides in her steadfast efforts to create a meaningful life for herself and her children and to open doors for other women to walk through.
