Opponents of Washington's same-sex marriage law blocked it from going into effect this week by turned in signatures to put the law to a vote. The Washington Secretary of State is expected to verify the signatures later this month in order to put Referendum 74 on the November ballot. Preserve Marriage Washington, the group seeking to overturn the law, says they collected more than 200,000 signatures, which is well above the 120,577 required to qualify for a referendum. Same-sex marriage has yet to be approved by voters in any state, but one pollster says Washington could be the one to buck the trend.
