Somali Communities

Two days after the bomb plot in Portland last week local Somalis gathered together for a "Peace and Unity" rally. At that rally Bashir Warsame, the executive director of the Somali Community Services Coalition said:

All Somali people are sad and I believe we want to show this as well as show that we want to increase support for our troubled youth.

Kayse Jama (who was on our show on Monday) spoke at the rally. He said:

This incident brought together all of us as a community.

Jama emphasized that the thousands of Somali-Americans who live here identify as Oregonians and as Americans. Somali leaders have been quick to point out that they condemn and reject violence, especially because many of the people who came here from Somalia were refugees fleeing violence in their homeland. Jama made reference to "at-risk" Somali youth and called on everyone present to do their part in making these young people feel like a part of the community at large. Portland is not alone in combating extremists who seek to entice Somali youth. Somali leaders in Minneapolis have been dealing with this issue for some time.

Somali-Americans are dealing with the stigma of terrorism on top of the recurring issue of piracy, but there are many success stories to come out of Somalia as well. In June, The Oregonian highlighted the story of a Somali teenager living happily in Beaverton, looking after her siblings and towards a bright future. She and Kayse Jama are just two of the many people who have come here, fleeing a war-torn country, to find new opportunities and a welcoming community.

Are you from Somalia? What was it like for you to come to Oregon? Do you see evidence of troubled Somali youth? What's your experience?

You probably never read two day old comments, but here they are anyway.

While the FBI's methods were questionable, in that they indirectly could not help but encourage the young man to voilence.  What would have happened if some well supported and experienced terrorist organization would have happened onto the same young man?   They would have undoubtedly also indirectly or directly encouraged and helped the guy get a bomb to its target - and detonate the real thing.

One core requirement it would seem was that the young man must willingly or perhaps even enthusiastically triggered what he thought was a bomb.

The lack of a recording about the bomb would make it especially important that his triggering the bomb was well documented or recorded and witnessed.

We LOVE it when people comment before the show! It can help shape our thinking about the subject or inspire us to take our research in a new direction. In any case, we read, digest and learn from all the comments on the site and we appreciate early commenters who give the conversation a jump start. So, thanks!

THANK  GOD  HIS  GOALS  TO  KILL  AND  MAIM  THOUSANDS (ESPECIALLY "AS  MANY  CHILDREN  AS   POSSIBLE")  WAS  THWARTED  AND  I  HOPE  HE  NEVER  HAS  A  CHANCE  TO  TRY  AGAIN >>>>  THE   DISCUSSION  WOULD  BE  MUCH  DIFFERENT  RIGHT NOW  IF  PIONEER   SQUARE  HAD  BECOME  THE  MOST  DEALDY  ISALMIC  TERRORIST  ATTACK  AGAINST  THE  USA>.  ITS  VERY  POSSIBLE  MORE  COULD  HAVE  BEEN  KILLED  THAN  ON  9/11>.  I  THINK  THE  SOMALI  COMMUNIY  BETTER  GET  ON  THE  BALL  AND  POLICE  THERE  OWN  >>  OR    GO  BACK  TO  HERDING   GOATS

Vitalpac, why don't you try your yelling in a much larger font and maybe even in color, maybe then you will get peoples attention.

Or try posting like a normal person and see if you get any agreement from people who stop to read your posts.

Frankly, when I see your "all caps posts" I just scroll past and it is my experience that most other people do the same.

Nobody likes an "Old Yeller". Like a street preacher, people just avoid them.

We all have been better on try to understand the actual reasons and circumstances at the rear of Wonder file Review why people become terrorists, each on this country as well as overseas.

Kudo's to Mr. Jama for his leadership... are there specifics he has in mind to resolve issues with Somali youth? What can they learn from the Somali community in Minnesota that was targeted for recruiting by Al Shabab (who are talking about the situation in Oregon: http://www.scrippsnews.com/content/somali-community-minnesota-shaken-oregon-terror-arrest )?

Lastly, what can the rest of us do (other than law enforcement) to support their efforts?

if  we  didnt have  somali  communities  we  wouldnt  have  to  worry  about   "extremists" ( u  cant  say  ISALMIC    extremeists>> i  understand  political  correctness  requires  such  nonspecificity) trying  to  subvert  somali   youth  to  bomb american  citizens.  >.  Are  there  other  examples  of   Somalis  who  have  come  to  America  only  to  become detrimental  to our  society  >.  i  think  a  fair  and  honest  discussion   would  include  the  mention  of  other  somali  islamic  terrorists  who  have  been  allowed    into  the  this  land  of  of  freedom.

i  googled  >somali terrorist  in USA<  113,000   entries   YIKES!!!

ITS  THE  ISLAMIC  TERRORIST  WITHIN  OUR  COUNTRY  THAT  ARE  MOST  DANGEROUS  >.  JUST  ASK  THE   CIA  AND  FBI.

US charges 19 with supporting Somali terrorists - Monsters and Critics

Remember that Timothy McVeigh, who bombed the Federal Bldg in Oklahoma City was a so-called "Christian" extremist.

Extreme viewpoints that espouse violence are a threat to all.

We are all better off to try to understand the reasons and conditions behind why people become terrorists, both in this country and abroad.

My family and I recently moved into a largely Somali community here in Portland. When we moved in back in June '10, the Somalians were very welcoming and most of them very friendly. It's clear that the actions of this one Somalian [Mohamed Osman Mohamud] who was trying to cause harm to Americans does not speak to the feelings and actions of all Somalians.

While I do not know the exact details of the FBI's process to convict a terrorist without it being legally declared entrapment, Mohamed Osman Mohamud wanted to do damage the best way he could find. He said himself he had been thinking of this kind of thing since he was 15. He could have been found by a real terrorist group, or just went out and bought a gun, shot as many people as he could before being brought down.

The point is he wanted to do this, he was given a means to his end and he pursued it.

Hi,

I am Somali myself and have lived in Oregon since 2006.  Even since I came here in Oregon, I haven’t seen Somalis making any problems to this country. And for the case of Mohamed Osman, I think it is a fabricated story that has no legal grounds whatsoever. It just serves the best interest of security agencies, politicians, media pundits, and NGOs who make a living for the so-called "home-grown terrorism."  That said, Mohamed seems to me someone who is not mentally stable.  If he hates this country, whatever the reason might be, he could simply go to somewhere else.

"NO LEGAL GROUNDS"  <<<<, you  must  be  kidding

yes  he  can go somewhere  else >.  jail  for  the  rest  of  his miserable life

There are many distinctions within the "Somali" community in Oregon and the US.

Many of the "Somalis" located in Portland and Beaverton are "Somali Bantus", a separate ethnic group, not historically Muslim, who have long been enslaved and subjugated by the dominant "Somali" population. Virtually all of them came to Oregon from the squalor of UN refugee camps in Kenya.

Please point out this distinction to your listeners.

The Somali Bantus in Oregon need our help, not our misdirected wrath.

By the way, a good history of the Somali Bantus can be found on the website of the "Somali Bantu Community Organization of Oregon" (SBCO).

Thanks

Bill

the  problem is not Somalis>> this wanna be terrorist wanted to kill in the name of and for  the  glory  of  islam

On Thanksgiving, Neil Conan asked people to call in with stories of who was missing at their table this year.  One person who called in had a brother in jail.  He described the pain the family experienced because of a renegade in their midst.  Like that family, the Somali community has to bear the weight of an individual who has committed a crime.  My heart goes out to them as they deal with their pain.

My comment about the Corvallis mosque fire possibly being an "inside job" was removed.

Why?

I'm sure the FBI is considering all angles...including that the fire was not set by a "revenge" seeker but by someone connected with the Islamic center.

BrownsvilleJohn, I have sent you an email about this and will be happy to discuss it offline.

Thank you.

It is  well  within the  realm of possibility  that  the  mosque  was attacked   by a mosque member  or  a muslim  sympathizer  tryig  to  deflect public disgust  at  the  actions  of  a islamic terrorist  tryig  to  bomb   a  CHRISTMAS TREE  lighting>>>>>>....

I don't believe the FBI stopped any actual terrorist plot at Pioneer Courthouse Square, but they have helped inspire  a real one. There was no real terrorism until after the FBI pulled its stunt with Mohamud.

This arson is clearly a real terrorist act.
What I want to know is if the folks at the mosque sometimes attended by Mohamud hold the FBI in some way responsible for the fire?

I think the FBI did a great job stopping their own staged attack.

However when terrorists attacked the mosque in Corvallis, the FBI failed to intervene.

Kayse Jama just said (on the live program) that 'we should not be anxious or worried' about the fact that many Somali youth have returned to Somalia for terrorist training and Muhamud wanted to kill thousands of Americans.  She just does not get it.  We have absolutely valid reason for concern.  When exactly does Kayse think we should be worried?  Her reaction is just scary.

I don't understand why people think the actions of one person represents an entire group.  Where is the persecution of all Hondurans after the attack on Gert Boyle by 3 Hondurans.

These Somali individuals on today's show are very articulate and have an excellent command of the English language.  Where did they learn English?  Did they learn as part of The Portland Public Schools ELL program?  I commend them for wanting to live the American Dream and recognizing the importance of speaking and understanding English.

With all respect to Somalia, I don't think so your guests don't want to address the actual problem which is the extremis Islamic.

I am from Africa, I do have all the challenge, cultural, language these problems do not make make a target for recruitment.

I do think the main problem is the predisposition that Somalia youths have to terrorist. We need to address the extremist problem no the general YOUTHS PROBLEMS.

There has been a lot of discussion about "Somali" youth. However, it's important to remember this young man was American. And immigrants and refugees, too, are currently -- or are on their way -- to becoming American citizens. How can we create a bigger definition of "American" so that these young people feel more of a part of our society? What can we do to fully embrace newcomers?

Liberals  are  so  easy  to  lead  down the garden path, the issue isnt Somali immigrants  its ISLAMIC TERRORISM.

In not one post  here  have I seen anyone metion  the politically incorrect  words  ISALMIC TERRORISM.>> libs  are  such  sheep.

Some pundits seperate the so-called Somali Banuts from the rest of the Somalis because they believe they are ' not historically Muslims" Therfore they " need our help." What about the rest?  This is a true religous discrimation comes from the West and Westerns. Good example of this is Southern Sudanees vs the Norther Sudanees. They love the Southern Sudanes simpily because they are not MUSlims. Please stop dividing people or hating Muslims on the bases of their faith.

I think that new refugees and immigrants ought to be taught over and over that we US Americans change things by voting and legislation and not by rebellious acts of violence. Teach them about how in the Civil War when half of our entire nation rebelled against the other half, the Confederacy lost and both sides lost horribly.

Teach them that many US Americans disagree with what our government does, under different barely elected leaders, to other peoples in the world, but we work to elect leaders who will lead with the views and policies that we agree with, and we don't go off doing what turns out are very misguided and stupid acts like trying to bomb people and things.

Heck, teach all that to native born American children too. Over and over.

This kid has really screwed up his life and he could have been a positive force for change,  what a horrible waste of Human Potential.

To your guest Kayse,

I am Somali living in Oregon. I do agree with you that we--Somali youth- have problems namely discrimation on the bases of religion and race;however, I don't think this can be changed both in the short and long term simply because people won't welcome blacks or Muslims. The only thing we Somalis can do is to learn to live with this society. You can't become " American" by simply saying " I am proud American."

Sadly, as long there is fear for people to live in , there will always be extremism.

To quote Sam Harris----"Anyone who can read passages like those quoted abover (three pages of quotes from the Koran) and still not see the link between the Muslim faith and Muslim violence should probably consult a neurologist"  The Christian bible is no doubt a "violent" book.  Few Christians have in the last century used it to justify violence. Slavery is one exception.

The German Nazis wore belt buckles that said "Gott Mit Uns", "God is With Us" (on our side) on them. So Christianity has a very large history of justifying violence in the name of their religion.

And how about G W Bush declaring a New Crusades in an early  speech to his Conservative Christian Republican base. And how about G W Bush declaring war against Iraq and then declaring "God Bless America".

Nobodys religion has clean hands. Even Buddhists have a history of violent wars.

So I can agree that religions are evil.

some  religions  are  more  evil  than  others  >.  as  far  as  i  know  it   is  only  islam  that  condones  killing  anyone  that  leaves  the  faith >..WAKE  UP  PEOPLE

I hate to say this, but if I was already anxious about immigrants, this discussion would encourage my fears.  How do you become a member of a new society when you are still focused so strongly on the old one.  How do children deal with the cultural changes if they are expected to hang up their Americaness when they come home? Why aren't the parents educated to understand they have moved to America and now need to assimilate.  Why can't they just sink or swim the same way my people did?  It's all too much - keep them out!

But, Mohamed Osman Mohamud is not an example of the Somalian community. Although,  he is an example of a young man whose father knew there was a problem - no matter what ethnicity someone is, if a parent suspects their child may become violent - there should be some way to deal with their concerns, that doesn't bring down an ax on the entire community.  This is not the first father we have heard of who was worried his son could be trouble.

The  "authorities" have named a local "teen" as a person  of interest in  the mosque arson >>>  is  there  no  outcry  that  he  is  just  a  youth? >>>  HELL  NO   HE  LOOKS  LIKE  A  SKIN  HEAD!!!

They  seized  empty propane bottles (think people  these  are  not  part  of  an  arson  or  they  would not  be  in  his  room), a  white  powder  substance(IF  IT  HAD  BEEN  DOPE  THEY  WOULD  HAVE  ARRESTED  HIM), empty plastic containers(OH  BROTHER), and  an  ORANGE  bic  lighter (that is   "evidence"?)

DO  I  NEED  TO  SPELL  IT  OUT  FOR  YOU??  >.  THIS  IS  ALL  BULL  CRAP>>  THEY  JUST  WANTED  TO  PUT  A  WHITE  SKIN  HEAD  LOOKING  GUY'S  PICTURE  ON  TV  SO  THE  MUSH HEADED  LIBS  WOULD  THINK  HE  DID  IT (this  is all  a nefarious  plot of  the  liberal  gestapo  cops[OBAMA'S JUSTICE  DEPARTMET}  and  the  media (BUNCH  OF  KISS  ASS  LIBS)  to put  the idea  in  people's  minds  that  a   "skin head"  did  it)>.  REINFORCE  THEIR  PRECONCEPTIONS  OF  THE  CRIME

people  need  to  learn  some  critical  thinking  skills

LOGIC  WOULD  SAY  THAT  IT  WAS  SET    BY MUSLIMS  WANTING  TO  DEFLECT  THE  ADMONITION  OF  THE  PUBLIC (that  is  a  good  motive ,  isnt  it?)

THE  FIRST  RULE  OF  WAR  IS  >>>  KNOW  YOUR  ENEMY  >.  THIS  IS  SOMETHING ISLAMIST  WOULD  DO  TO   MAKE  THEMSELVES  THE  "VICTIM" AFTER  SUCH  BAD PUBLICITY  AS  AN ATTEMPTED  MASS  MURDER  BY  ONE  OF  THEIR  OWN

MY  LIFE  IS  NOW  IN  DANGER

It is interesting how 300 Liberal "progressives" of Corvallis stood in the rain in "solidarity" with the Muslim community at their mosque after one of their own tried to commit mass murder in Portland at the Christmas tree lighting event.  What's strange is that Mohamed O. Mohamud was merely carrying out the Koran's call on all Muslims to smite the infidel...doing what his "good book" told him to do.  Yet, the Libtards believe he was an exception...in contast to the peaceful religion of Islam.  The problem is that even if 90% of Muslims are truly peaceful people, that leaves 10% of 'em who want to kill or convert you...and will if we let them!

It will probably take another shock or two on the order of the 9/11 attacks for most people to "get it".  Some never will, however...
