Standoff in Stanfield
The city of Stanfield off I-84 in Umatilla County doubled its gas tax from one-cent per gallon to two-cents in 2009. The Pilot Travel Center, a truck stop that employs about two dozen Stanfield residents, says the new tax is too much. The company says they are strongly considering closing the Stanfield location if the city doesn't repeal, or at least reduce, the gas tax. City officials are scheduled to sit down with Pilot representatives this week to try to work out their differences. Stanfield Mayor Tom McCann says that while completely repealing the gas tax is not an option, he's optimistic about the negotiations.
Would you be affected if the Pilot Travel Center in Stanfield closed? Does the city or town where you live have a gas tax? Do you think about gas taxes when you travel? Does it influence where you fuel up?
