A new report details how Oregon is doing at teaching English as a second language to public school students. School districts track their progress towards meeting federal targets: Did at least 57% of ELL (English Language Learners) students in Oregon move up by one level of English proficiency? Did at least 17% of all ELL students in Oregon reach proficiency and exit the program?

Last year saw a record number of Oregon's ELL students reached the federal measure of proficiency in English, but the majority of ELL students in the state were still not proficient in English. According to Education Week, Oregon is not the only state struggling to meet the needs of students learning English as a second language.

The current report is out today. We'll dig into the details with deputy superintendent of public instruction Rob Saxton.

Did you learn English as a second language in public school? What was your experience? Are you the parent of a child learning English as a second language? What works best for them? What is not working?
