Two unions have been tussling over jobs at the Port of Portland's Terminal 6. The National Labor Relations Board ruled Monday that the two jobs in question belong to the electrician's union (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 48) and not the longshoremen of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 8. Longshoremen have traditionally done the jobs of plugging and unplugging refrigerated shipping containers, but that was called into question when the port leased the terminal to a private operator.
All sides say the dispute is about more than just these two jobs; it's about principle and precedent.
