The Oregon State Police does not have enough officers to cover the state 24 hours a day. Less officers means that people might not get the help they need, when they need it. Last year, the state police told individuals 40 times a day they had no one to respond to their distressed calls.
Lieutenant Mark Walkup is the Director of the Southern Command Center, one of two in the state. He dispatches officers for 40 percent of Oregon's population, covering two-thirds of the state's land. We'll find out how Walkup makes decisions about who gets and help and why — and what that means for public safety.
