Whitney Otto's Portraits Of Eight Girls Taking Pictures
Best-selling Portland author Whitney Otto is perhaps best known for her book, How to Make an American Quilt. In that book, as with her latest novel, Eight Girls Taking Pictures, the lives of her characters are interwoven. Her novel is based on the real lives of 20th century women photographers. Northwest photographer Imogen Cunningham is the first one we meet, though we come to know her as Cymbeline — a rich and textured character, much like Cunningham's photographs.
Though the photographers featured in Eight Girls Taking Pictures are historical, the dominant theme of the tension between motherhood and professionalism is eerily modern.
Have you read How To Make an American Quilt, Eight Girls Taking Pictures or Otto's other books? What questions do you have for Whitney Otto?
