on Local Library
As a college student, my excessive tuition goes to the extensive library services I am fortunate to use every day to research and write papers. What is particularly helpful is how well books and articles are catalogued online. I can type in search words and in minutes, a list is generated of everything I could possibly need.
I think this type of system makes the library particularly accessible to someone my age, who has grown up with the internet. Regardless of whether or not everything is "going to be online anyways" the more we can strengthen the connection between the internet and physical books instead of isolating them will deterimine the way we acquire and retain information.
In the summertime, I use the library in my hometown to check out books and CDs that I never have time to enjoy during the school year. I think that without the mere knowledge of a library being there, I would go crazy. If none of my other career options work out, I plan to go to library school.

on Finding Solutions: Arts Education
As a music education major, one of the ideals that drives me to teach music despite the lack of economic incentive is how the arts teaches children empathy. This is something that no other subject offers with the same substantial emotional connection.
Having grown up in the musically flourishing Salem-Keizer area, I received a unique perspective on how the arts can thrive with the right district and parent support. I am now student teaching in the drastically different environment of N. Portland, and I am more than ever convinced that arts education is something that needs to be preserved.
We must offer kids as many ways to express themselves as possible.

on Not At School
At my high school, I recently performed in the Broadway musical, "Pippin". With some careful editing and staging, we were still able to present the play, staying true to the story. It's not impossible for high schools to do this, but it depends on the comfort level of the cast, as well as the audience. La Grande was not completely out of line.
