on Sealing the Cracks in Foster Care

I've come in late here.  But this is amazing journalism. Heartbreaking stories that Oregonians need to follow and understand.

on Northwest Passages: Lynn Schooler

Reading Blue Blear gave a whole new dimension to our feeling for Alaska. Yet another great discovery there! We cruised to Alaska two summers ago in a 40 foot sailboat and back south last summer, offshore this time because our engine was kaput!   The Last Shot was great as well.   Now we are putting Lynn Schooner's other two books on our on board library but saving them for our sail north this summer.

Will Lynn Schooner be at the Fisher Poets Gathering this weekend in Astoria?

on Warming Up to Climate Change

Thank you for taking up the issue of these important reports which Oregonians will be struggling to come to grips with in the months ahead.

My own concern is water conservation and the significant opportunities afforded by alternative approaches to sanitation.   A hundred years ago Theodore Roosevelt said (New York Times, 20 Aug 1910) this:  Civilized people ought to know how to dispose of sewage in some other way than putting it into the drinking water.

Our water-borne sanitation infrastructure is crumbling as the population of the Willamette Valley grows - and will attract climate change refugees from water poor areas in the future.   It's time for serious research into ecological sanitation and closing nutrient loops.  We need to speed up adoption of composting systems, graywater reuse, rainwater harvesting, urine diversion for phosphorus capture, and a wealth of technologies already well established and scaling up in northern Europe.

on Laugh Out Loud

The funniest thing for me is that guy standing at the top of the steps hailing a cab!    You know, the Seward Johnson sculpture in Pioneer Courthouse Square? http://www.sewardjohnson.com/collection/business/sub-sub-A/sub-sub-sub-details/sub_sub_sub_detail_02.html

This makes no sense at all!    In Washington DC, for example, the same [commercially produced] figure stands on the curb facing the street.   Time to get the fellow out of his predicament and moved to a more logical place, such as sidewalk in front of an Old Town Chinatown pub.

on Politics for the Under 35 Set

I'm 62 but for 35 years I lived overseas in developing countries. Problems with getting absentee ballots on time effectively disenfranchised me.

Since moving back to the US I feel like a new voter and I love working alongside young voters. They usually "get it" on on the need for workforce housing, public transportation, and public restrooms. Plus they are entrepreneurial on social issues and in business.

Our neighborhood association just elected a strong new board with lots of under 35s, enabling me to step down as Chair and simply support younger folks who will get the job done.
