on Where Bikes and Cars Intersect

Yes, cars and bikes should be as separate as possible. Bikes cannot excel as fast as cars can and lets face it; I have airbags when I get in an accident, bikers have nothing but a helmet and that's only to protect their head.

Also, I must take this chance to air a pet peeve.... Bikers who don't stop at stop signs and lights. If bikers and I have to share the road, we should have to share the rules. Plus, as a biker, don't THEY care about THEIR own safety?

on Politics for the Under 35 Set

I am not sure what generation I am part of, but I am 22 years old. I am entusiastic about politics and will be voting. I think young people can bring a fresh energy to politics. We haven't had the time to become cynical and pessimistic. I think we can still think outside the box and be creative with our solutions.

on Are You Gonna Eat That?

Thanks. And even though fresh produce was never a staple in my diet as a child, I am still trying to educate myself today. I just think another conversation we could have is about our American diet in general. I would say that Oregon's collective diet does not mirror the rest of the country's; fast, cheap, processed.

People won't start to care about where their food comes from if they don't even eat fresh foods.

on Are You Gonna Eat That?

My mother rarely prepared fresh food, so it seems rediculous, but sometimes I just don't know how to prepare fresh food. Or what recipes to use fresh produce in.

on Guarding Against School Violence

I was in 7th grade when Columbine happened. In that same year, my school went into lockdown because a man had gone on a shooting rampage at his former work office... the office was at least 5 miles away, across a bridge, down a hill, in a whole other neighborhood. (((From Queen Anne in Seattle to Wallingford)))

It seemed, or perhaps we hoped, Columbine would be an isolated incident. Unfortunately that has not been the case. We are hyper-aware and prepared because we have to be. This has become our reality. To ignore it is to wish to be naive.

Do most Iraqis fear American soldiers? What are the general thoughts of America and it's soldiers.

on The Legality of Homelessness

Please, Please, Please have a conversation about homelessness and how Portland as a city is "dealing" with it. How does Portland stack up compared to other cities? Do we have more homelessness or less? Do we have more human services programs or less? Are we doing enough? My overall question is this: Is Portland trying to help its homeless population "get back on its feet" with human services programs and the like; or is Portland just trying to remove its homeless from visibility with things like the "sit and lie" laws. I think it would be very interesting to hear whether Portlanders think we are doing too much or too little to help our homeless population.

Sorry there is so many questions in this post.

on It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's a... Secretary of State?

Our election process is not dynamic. It is convoluted and not accurate with respect to the popular vote. Much like the tax code, leave it up to Americans to come up with this confusing and inefficient system. And that's not even getting into how this system reinforces disenfranchising certain groups of our society.

on Finding a Home for the Criminally Insane

I think Salem's officials should be ashamed of themselves for "jumping" at the chance to be rid of this responsibility. Where do they suppose we place this faction of our society? They should cry for more resources rather than to be rid of this "pesky" problem.

on Patrolling Myspace

I have a MySpace and I use it as a way to keep in contact with people that I would not normally phone. I have found it is easier and quicker to keep up on the happenings of my friends and just leave a short comment rather than have an hour long phone conversation.

I also protect my image on MySpace. I keep it private and only approve "friend" requests from people I have met in person. I also try to be thoughtful about the photos that I put up and will sometimes remove stuff after further contemplation. I want to be sure that the person on MySpace is the person I am in life.

If anything, MySpace is a fantastic forum to feed our narcissistic urge for attention and acceptance. I believe some people use it as an extention of the cliques in schools. Gathering as many friends as they possibly can, not caring whether they know them or not.

on Fixing Foster Care

I am originally from Seattle and I know that we were experiencing budget cuts in human services in King County but at the same time, our jail system was experiencing an increase in budget. I want to ask, if we do not have the funds that we need for our child welfare programs (in Oregon) and for preventative programs, where is this money going, or at least where do you perceive this money is going?

on Domestic Partnerships vs. Initiative Process

For such a progressive state I would think that Oregon would realize that a married man, woman and 2.5 kids is no longer the model nuclear family. It is time to recognize all families - married, not married, same-sex and not.

I will be spending my rebate on a new mattress which is made in the US because that is my patriotic duty. NOT apparel which is made largely in Asian countries.
