on Helping People Far Away
I spent most of the last 20 years working for non-profits some of them very large. Currently I am on the board of the Zimbabwe Artistis Project (ZAP) which is a small non-profit doing a big job. What impresses me about project like Africa Bridge and ZAP is how much they accomplish on small budgets. Many times they do much more with much less than larger non-profits.

I was robbed twice at gunpoint while living in Uganda. I also walked in on an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven when I was 14. In none of those situations would I have wanted someone who thought they needed to "help" the situation by shooting or even carying a gun. What is called for is staying as calm as possible, not carrying a gun. I am absolutely convinced that these people are not making us more safe they are making us less safe.

on Bottling It Up in Cascade Locks
How much revenue does the town expect yearly from this? What will the additional costs for road repair be? How long will the spring water hold out?
The bottom line is Nestle is selling a product no one needs. They're selling us a resource that belongs to all of us.
Hopefully the woman who is going to talk from California will shed some light on the McCloud experience.
Here's an article on the fight they've been waging.

on Natural Medicine?
Unfortunately, changing prescription laws for naturopathic physicians may do nothing to solve the amount of undue and costly influence the insurance companies have over the process. In many instances insurance companies, while keeping compensation for naturopathic doctors artificially low, drive up the cost of a patient's care.
What commonly happens is that an insurance company will refuse to compensate an ND for prescribing certain medications, or lab tests. This forces the ND to refer the patient to an MD who will be compensated by the same insurance company for prescribing the medication or labs. This simply results in additional office visit costs and other charges.
What is needed for real reform, is for people with insurance to demand from their insurance companies and/or legislators equal treatment and compensation for naturopathic doctors. This compensation should be on an equal basis with other primary care doctors.
