To some extent, I think the 40 hour work week is contributing to professional dissatisfaction. If you think about it, the corporate world is fixated on this as "full-time" employment, and it's an arbitrary number made up by the baby boomers. I wonder if people would be more satisfied if they worked 30 hours or even 35 hours a week? Imagine for a minute if you could do this, and would it make a difference? Realistically, a lot of us are working way more than 40 hours a week just to pay the bills. What would it take to make a "job" sustainable?
