I think the secret behind the success of manga is moe (pronounced MO-eh). It is basically the style of drawing characters with big eyes, small pointy noses and mouths and angular chins as well as their personalities. Moe is a Japanese concept attributed to manga that describes a characters ability to invoke a sort of overwhelming desire to protect the character. It is a feeling that is akin to the cuddly feeling one gets when seeing a cute kitten or puppy. In this way, the reader becomes enamored with the character.
