on The Benefits of Auctioneering

Personally, I'd prefer auctions if the auctioneer would slow down and speak in a manner that is clear and easy to understand. I won't bid if they go too fast. I was at an auction this summer that was very well handled and had a good 'rythm' but every word was clear and I appreciated that. Guest could slow down her speaking a tad when not auctioneering also!

on What is Informed Consent?

How about this- I have faith that the religious will see the light and realize that there is no god. The more this is proven to them the more likely they are to open their eyes.

Very well said. One caller (I believe her name was Tessa) was an excellent example of a brain washed child. This is child abuse!

The only way these folks are going to see the light is if enough prosecutions happen. That way, they will begin to realize that there is no god, faith healing does not work, and relying on it will only result in death and prosecution. Brain washing children into believing in faith & faith healing should be an offense.

Well said. I also find the 'twenty kids and counting' shows thoroughly irresponsible.

Over-population is the key to many societal and world issues. By not having kids, I have done far more to 'save the world' than those who have 2 kids, recycle everything and drive a prius.

on Faith in the Recession

It all boils down to one simple question:

Does god have power?

If so, he should use it to stop the pain and suffering, financial or otherwise.

If not, why bother giving time, money, faith and love to him?

on Faith in the Recession

Great comment. Don't these folks realize that giving money to their church is just making things worse? And having faith in something that doesn't exist will prvent them from making things happen.

It saddens me to hear these poor misguided folks have faith in something that has no power or influence.

on Faith in the Recession

Well said. As an atheist, I consider myself very fortunate that I am not burdened by unrealistic faith in an non-existent 'god', nor having to pay for that faith. Surely if there was a god, he would have prevented all this pain and suffering?

on Mt. Hood Search

I have visited and stayed at Timberline Lodge many times. To those who have never been, I thoroughly recommend a trip there. Even at the lodge, the weather can change quickly and visibility can diminish at an astonishing rate. I cannot imagine what that would be like up on the mountain.

I would like to climb to the summit, but will not attempt to,  because I am not experienced enough nor qualified to. Simpe as that.

Hopefully the lost climbers will be found holed up in a snow cave. That would certainly be a nice Christmas present for them and their families.

The endorsement process would be an excellent opportunity to teach cyclists the laws of the road as they pertain to bicycles. Great idea!

Niether pedestrians, nor those pushing strollers are asking for major changes to the infrastructure to add lanes for them. That's why they should not pay.

I'd like to see more education on traffic laws- both for cyclists and drivers. In addition, I'd like to see stiffer penalties and more enforcement of these rules. It is all very well encouraging more cycling, but with that will come more conflict.

I believe many people are just ignorant of the rules. An example of this is the amount of drivers using their fog lights all the time because they believe it makes them safer. This is illegal. Similarly, many cyclists believe they can blow through stop signs. This is also illegal.

Education and enforcement will help.

Well said. Mini Coopers aren't the best for seeing red lights, but it is the drivers responsibility to see the signal.

Thanks for the example- more evidence that these devices are not 'silly' (as a caller just stated sevveral times) and do work.

Good point. I stop on yellow and am always afraid of being rear-ended.

on Red Light Cameras

I think this points to a bigger issue. With more and more traffic on the roads, and our society suffering from a time famine, it is inevitable that rules will be broken. However, I believe that the majority of drivers are unaware of how easy it is to abide by the rules of the road. I frequesntly see violations such as running red lights, driving with fog lights on and failure to use turn signals. Safe driving is a habit that we should all adopt, yet few seem to. That's where the problem lies.

On a side note, if we were to replace many STOP signs with YIELD signs, we could save time and fuel. And save on tickets!

on Leading a Horse to Slaughter

Barbwire:

Is all slaughter cruelty? We have standards for animal handling and transport, and many horses are used to being hauled around.

Do you know about the incredible damage being done by horses to western rangelands?

This damage is not being done by sheep or cattle, but horses. The sheep and cattle are managed, the horses are not.

The US spends a lot of money each year feeding horses untile they die. My taxes pay for that. meanwhile, people go without meat because it is too expensive.

I suggest you do some research and use logic instead of emotion in your commentary.

Sincerely,

Paul.
