on Final Dress Rehearsal

So, from what I have read, OPB is basically transforming THINK OUT LOUD into TALK OF THE STATE (or perhaps TALK OF OREGON).

.

So, are the trial episodes available as podcasts via iTunes? I hope so, because every time I download an episode of TOL via the website, iTunes tries to classify it as a "song." As a result, I have a Playlist called "Podcasts That Think They're Songs."

on Rebroadcast: Math Appeal

Most of the math I had to take for my schooling, from public school to college has been intriguing, challenging, and even fun -- UNTIL I GOT TO CALCULUS! (MTH241, MTH242) Then it was just annoying and damn near unintelligible -- I gotta confess, I really do not know when, as an accountant or bookkeeper, I will EVER use Calculus! Algebra, maybe, but Calculus?!?!?

on The Oregon State Hospital Today

Good Point, Emily, as the Oregon State Hospital focusses on MENTAL health, rather than physiological health. (SEE: One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest, The Chief, McMurphy and all the 'nuts' in the boat.)

on International Students in Oregon

Interesting how almost all of the comments herein (if not ALL) have nothing to do with the stated topic -- International Students in Oregon -- but much to do about the unrest in the Middle East, and the (then-)proposed LIbyan No-Fly Zone.

Yes, I admit that my one earlier comment was off-topic as well, but it was meant as a Parseltongue-in-cheek response to another's comment (which appears to have since been deleted).

on Changing Child Sex Crime Law

While I doubt that sexual abuse at the hands of clergy is not solely a Catholic problem, I am still glad I didn't grow up Catholic!

That said, I am still sorry for all the people who were put through such trauma.

on Changing Child Sex Crime Law

I think the statute of limitations on reporting sex crimes should be repealed -- especially in the case of minors. I also think that there should be no statute of limitations on any crime of sexual violence, whether it is sexual assault, rape, or whatever.

I consider myself fortunate to never have been the victim of sexual assault, and to never have had anyone I was close to be sexual assaulted.

on Finding Work

Then why am I having so much bad luck? I have applied to just about every fast-food restaurant in Eugene (and Springfield) and many of the places that would need cashiers, especially places I can get to by bus? (I can't afford a car -- not with gas approaching $4 a gallon again!)

Try getting a job in your mid-40's! That's pretty damn hard, too!

Get off the keyboard and put yourself out there. -- DrKeelyK

Easier said than done, when EVERYBODY is sending you to their website to apply. And I do mean EVERYBODY -- even McDonald's won't give you the time of day as an applicant unless you have done the online application.

on Finding Work

Here's my worst job-hunt story: I am still looking, after almost THREE YEARS! I left my last full time job in May 2008, and have been looking ever since. I am getting pretty disgusted and discouraged that nobody seems to want to interview -- let alone hire -- an applicant who is over 25. My resume is written in such a way that I don't explicitly reveal my age, but even someone with third-grade arithmetic skills can add up my experience, and see how old I am. And that's only with relevant experience on the resume.

Don't get me started on the so-called "Employment" Office, either. They don't really do anything other than give you a piece of paper that says who to contact and where, but you are still totally on your own as far as competing against all the other people that the "Employment" office has given the same piece of paper to. They don't do any real pre-screening, they don't do any interviewing, if they were really in the business of getting people into jobs, they would be able to make placements.

on Intervention in Libya

I would be interested to hear why we (the civilized nations of the world) have allowed this insane despot to remain in power so long...42 years -- seriously?!?!? If memory serves, He whom Tea-partiers revere as the Second Coming (Reagan), ordered an assault on Qaddaffy's (or Ghadafi or Khadaffee or however it is spelled -- I've seen several different spellings) palace back in 1986, about the same time as he gave Amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants (not that I think there is a connection).

on Health Care Changes

I still don't understand why so many people seem to be getting their panties in a bunch over the idea of a single-payer health care system. If it works well in Canada, Japan, the U.K., and much of Europe, then why do some people seem to think it won't work here? We have learned over the past couple of years, throughout this debate, that Medicare is far and away more efficient than any of the for-profit health insurance companies. If it is efficient enough for my grandparents and your grandparents, then what makes so many people think that it is the exactly wrong way to go? Why CAN'T we extend Medicare to all age brackets. Maybe it would be easier if we lowered the eligibility age by five-year steps once a year. (So we lower the eligibility to 60 as of July 1, 2011, then to 55 as of July 1, 2012, to 50 as of July 1, 2013, etc. This way, the system isn't inundated by 140 million (a guesstimate) people all at once.)

on Oregon's Japanese Community

You know something? I admit it...I can't distinguish between Japanese, Chinese, and Korean folks just by looking at them, but I can make a reasonable guess if I hear them talk. (I took two years of Japanese in college, but without the opportunity to use it, I've lost most of my skill in this area.) I can also make an educated guess as to which is which between the written forms of the respective languages.

Then again, I am not in a position to do business with the Far East on a frequent basis, so I am not ashamed of my "ethnic naivete," as it were. But I am always willing to learn.

Is anyone else having reception problems? Especially in the Eugene Area? I turned on OPB about 45 minutes ago, and found the signal over KOPB-AM 1600 to be non-existent, and the signal over KOAC-AM 550 to basically sound like, well, it starts with 's' and rhymes with 'wit.'

REALLY MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY MEANINGFUL MANNER.

Another idea I had was to reduce the salaries of most state elected officials. Does the Governor, whether it is someone we like or loathe, really need a salary of over $100,000? Can't they do their job perfectly well on a salary that is more in line with what the average Oregonian earns and lives on?

on Northwest Passages: Chelsea Cain

Tom, when they do a re-broadcast, they so note in the title of the show. There was one about a week ago that was a rebroadcast, and the title of the discussion page said, "Rebroadcast: The Benefits of Auctioneering." (This one was originally done in December.)

I would get rid of the Corporate Kicker for sure. This should never have gone into place. It smacks of corporate welfare, right up with cities and counties building multi-million dollar stadia for the sole purpose of retaining the professional sports teams located there. (Example: Safeco Field -- most people in the Seattle area seemed to agree that it was wanted, but the method of financing that was proposed was met with strong opposition. Local elected officials did an end-run around the voters and went to the State Legislature to get their funding proposal put into place.)

on Northwest Passages: Chelsea Cain

Thank you, Dave. I wrote to the general TOL Staff email address (thinkoutloud@opb.org) over the weekend to let you guys know about the proliferation of ad hominem attacks. I usually enjoy coming to the blog and reading, and contributing to a lively, thoughtful exchange of ideas, but the spate of personal attacks made me begin to think about leaving and not coming back. I would not have liked to do that.

I, for one, try to make thoughtful comments that add to the discussion, even if they are occassionally slightly tangentially off-topic. Sometimes my comments are a bit tongue-in-cheek (like the "Voldemort" comment in the International Students thread), but I try to keep them respectful and well-thought out. When I am responding to another poster's comment directly, I usually quote and give credit for the comment I am responding to. I hope that TOL has a long and thought-provoking life on OPB.

Courteously,

Penelope McKibben

on Tsunami

I would guess, Tom, that the station where that happened was KZEL (96.1); they also played a tape at 7:30 a.m. that went "It's 7:30 in the morning -- GET YOUR A$$ OUT OF BED!!!" Also, when they did the news, they said they were bringing us "The news from around the world, across the nation, and up your street." Then a second voice would say, "Up mine?" to which the first voice would respond, "Up yours." Certainly a rather irreverent way to introduce the news -- I don't know if they ever got in trouble for it, as they were still doing it up until the end of Feb 1983, when we moved to Texas.
