on Staff Pick: Downsizing as a Senior

I am hoping that when I am old enough to retire that there will be gay living facilities where I can spend time in a homosexual environment.  Honestly, being trapped with other seniors not being able to express myself sounds like a horrible way to spend my golden years.

on Kicking the Kicker?

I am a staunch Democrat and voted yes for the new taxes but I really dislike the govenor trying to twist my vote into anything doing with the kicker.  If he wants to create a rainy day fund find another way to do it.  Shouldn't we review our tax structure and make the necessary changes to make it stable.

on Candidate Conversation: U.S. Senator

Instead of you asking Merkley about the ads, I would be more interested in what he plans to bring to Oregon if he gets elected. I appreciated Gordon Smith for his moderate social views but I feel that his voting with Bush on the major issues really hampers us. I would rather have a new senator who will better represent Oregon than a conservative who gives us a nod on social issues without hurting himself with his party.

I also want to tell Merkley that if all he intends to do is raise taxes he will not be the senate for very long. I want people in office who will first clean up all of the waste, reorgainize, then look at raising taxes fairly. I suggest starting with the rich and become a frind to small businesses.

on Schools Left Behind

Why is the focus on schools? Where is the responsibility of the child. I dare say that the schools are not failing but the child is failing and their parents are failing. If they knew what work their child needed to do the parents could work on reading and math to get them to passing at grade level. If your child is not doing as well as you think they should be look first at your child, then how you are doing as a parent, then the teacher.

on Obama and Race in Oregon

As a person of mixed race I ask white people all the time what their mix is. So I don't think that it is an insult to ask someone what their ethnicity is. It helps everyone to see that most of us are mixed.

Race is still an issue and I think that it is incumbent upon other races to include people in their racial celebrations so that more people can experience what they have to offer. The sooner we can celebrate one another and our differences the sooner we will leave the negativity of racism behind us.

I took a trip to Costa Rica and I remember seeing people of all races mixing with one another with absolutely no judgement. Someone could be called negra or blancha but it was as a casual observation like saying someone had brown eyes or green eyes. When I asked our tourguide if people would be offended to be called negra he said no. We are all costa ricans and love one another. A person's skin color does not mean that someone is better or worse than someone else.
