on A Mighty Wind in Union County

You guest is wrong about property taxes.  Your guest asserts that property owners will pay less in property taxes because of the installation of wind farms.  Because of Oregon's weird voter-encacted property tax system, property taxes paid by wind farms will not cause others taxes to decline.  If you don't believe me, call the county tax assessor.

on Foot Traffic

People run in the street because it is easier on the feet than the sidewalk.  Pavement is softer than concrete - believe it or not.  Also, there's a greater risk of spraining an ankle when you are negotiating curbs while running.  More curb-cuts might get more people running on the sidewalks instead of the streets.

on Rebroadcast: Guiding the Willamette

How can we ever hope to get/keep the river clean when development continues to occur right on the banks of the river and its tributaries?  Can't we set aside these undeveloped areas (that are left) in order to protect the river?  Seems like the local leaders are talking out of both sides of their mouth - they promote development, and at the same time spend more and more money on river cleanup.  Let's keep the real-estate devleopers away from the riverbank - we will help the river and save a lot of money to-boot!

on Crypto Stories

Milwaukee draws its drinking water from Lake Michigan - a heavily polluted water body that receives effluent and runoff from a densely populated area.  Contrast that with Portland, where our water comes from the Bull Run Watershed - a pristine protected old-growth forest closed to humans and domestic animals.  There's really no comparison.  Cryptosporidium poses no significant risk to Portland's water system.  This story seems sensationalist to me.  I thought OPB had higher standards of journalism.  This story is more akin to something you'd see on FOX news.

David Miller - The point is that those who are concerned about the (very small) risk of Cryptosporidium in Portland's drinking water can easily protect themselves by filtering their water at home.

More info from cdc on filtering out cryptosporidium - refutes what David Shaff said about in-home filtration:

You can indeed filter your water at home for Cryptosporidium.  It requires a 0.5 micron filter - readily available.

The LT2 rule-making process was heavily influenced by the water treatment industry, and much of the "science" behind the LT2 was actually funded by the water treatment industry.  Treating already pure water makes no sense to anyone, except of course, the big corporations and high-paid consulting and engineering firms who stand to profit from LT2.

Thieves would love to know where all the guns are. That's one good reason to keep the CHL holders info private.
