on Immigration Law

I am opposed to the Arizona law and think it should be repealed. I am trying to get through over the phone and have been unable. Please call me at 503-501-6411 so I can share my thoughts over the air.

I am an elementary school teacher in a Dual Immersion Spanish/ English program. I work with Latino and Anglo families through my work and have had nothing but positive experiences with Latino families, those here legally and those her without documentation. Those who do not have papers I find to be extremely hard-working, TAX-PAYING, and unable to benefit from all the services their tax dollars go to funding. Students whose parents are here illegally are not able to obtain federal loans for college (I support the passage of the DREAM act) and these children often do not have health insurance, regardless of their American citizenship.  Families without documentation, I find, are here to make an honest living and provide their children with a better education than they have access to in their home country.  They are MORE involved and supportive, in my experience, than their American citizen counterparts. These families provide a cultural richness and model of citizenship, based on family unity, hard work, and dedication to education.

I believe I am in fact, in the majority of Northwest opinion and am highly suspicious of the results of the poll you are quoting.

Thank you, Jessica Firestone
