We will cut back, though I to do not see myself as a consumer and not sure
from where we have to cut back. I do think that there is an upside in all this, as it causes us to slow down, think about what we do have and maybe humble us a little. The poor will be with us always, but until we feel our own pocket books get hit, we rarely see them. But we may consume ourselves into being them. I think for anyone with food on the table a roof over their head and health among themselves and family members it is a time to be greatful.

I am not an econimist, but I am tired of hearing how
the market reigns supreme and will fix itself, then the same people
who seem to think this and scoff at welfare or help for the poor
expect this bail out. Give the $2000 to each tax payer.

I am the parent of a kindergartener. I am new to the intrest in all of this. I have sought the wisdom of others in deciding where to send our daughter.
One friend a teacher was commenting as she was a teacher in a good school w/ good scores said she would like to take the credit, but acknowledged that much of the credit is to be attributed to parent involvement. I think what tchrlu is saying is exactly right. Teachers will gravitate to the "easy" schools and the schools who truely need the outstanding teachers will get the duds. I am still in search of the best way to advocate for my childs education. If we had the funds I would put her in private school, but for now I will do my best to supplement what she gets at school and check into charter schools, and getting class sizes SMALLER!!!!!

Where will the next good paying job for anywhere come from?

It doesn't pay to get a job too far away, because you end up just paying to get there and back, especially if it is a minimum wage job. So even if there are jobs available it just might not pay to take them. Could this ultimately be good as it gets us to re-evaluate how we live and impact the planet?

"in proportion to our increasing population." I wonder if where the incoming population is coming from has such beauty and opportunity for being in the outdoors. Maybe it is simply not having the history. I was blessed to grow up at youth camps as a parent was staff, and feel so blessed, as well my grandparents were ranchers, I feel quite constricted living in town, but simply can not afford to live in the conditions I had growning up, but miss it terribly. I do take opportunity to use the state parks. I was a foster parent and at one point the state made it very easy for foster parents to get passes to the parks to share the out door with kids in their care. In the past it has become increasingly difficult. I need to point out that a 25 dollar pass should be easier to get for foster parents. They are already under paid and take on children most people don't. Also I would like to reccomend that Silver Falls allow dogs on the trail from Mid- October to Mid - April or or May. I understand in the summer there is not enough room, but if you go to hike the falls in mid- november in the early morning, there is no one there and i feeel much safer walking alone with my dog in the winter.

Children gong back to their bio-homes is very difficult. As the one bio-parent spoke judges are not trained in social work. Is it fair to return a child "home" only to see them come back into care? How many kids that are returned home have bonded to their foster family after years in care. How many children are returned home only to go back into the system? please keep asking these questions and keep asking why we believe sports areans are more important than children?

There is a group called CASA. Also there is a group called the citizen review board that assist in reviewing cases. Please participate in that. Also find someone who is a foster parent and ask them what they need. a bunk bed, a night off, a mentor for a child. Please get involved at what ever level you can. Thank you!

We moved here in the height of a recession around 1980 when i was a child. Not from California, but from the south west.
I don't believe there was a welcome sign. If so it was followed by enjoy your visit, but don't stay. Though we experienced some tough times, I think it is better for me anyway to be poor in oregon, than rich in many other places.
We have it all desert, mountains, coast, what more could you ask.
Sure, I got "through" and would love to bar the door, but maybe anybody who can take all this rain and enjoy it, and respect the environment, should not feel excluded. We later moved to California, and then returned. Glad no one closed the gate. :)

Just an observation. But I seem to see a disproportionate amount of Texas Plates. It seems I see more Texas Plates than California or Washington.
