on Measure 66

Years of anti-government activists working to destroy the state's infrastructure and funding mechanisms. I moved to Oregon prior to Measure 5, when the schools had a national reputation for excellence. It's been downhill since then.

on Measure 66

These Measures are about fairness. With my modest income, I pay a higher tax rate than a household that makes over a quarter of a million dollars. We need to take this first step toward making our tax system more fair.

Vague statements about "there are other things we could do" are the equivalent of a magician re-directing your attention--no specifics are given, and the immediate, painful effects that will be borne by the majority of Oregonians are treated as if they're not real.

The sad thing is, the cuts will be felt most deeply by those of us who already pay more than our fair share.

on Sex Ed

It's unbelievable to me that this parent thinks that having a child is a good way to learn a lesson. I think it borders on child abuse--of both her own child and her child's child. You would hope that she would want better for her own child, but she sounds very smug in saying "that'll teach her". And apparently, she wants to visit this kind of anger and abuse on everyone else's children too. I am sorry for her daughter, and appalled that the mother feels entitled to visit this kind of abuse on other people's children. Human beings have this thing called education that allows us to pass on information to others without everyone having to suffer disasterous consequences. And this includes preventing pregnancy.

on From the Conventions: Speeches and Veeps

If the Republicans think they'll pick up Hillary supporters by nominating a woman, they have seriously underestimated the intelligence of the American voters. Palin's extreme position on women's right to make their own reproductive choices will be the immediate deal breaker--we don't even have to get to lack of experience. When I heard the announcement this morning, I thought OMG, the Republicans really want to lose this race--they may know that the mess left behind by Bush/Cheney is even worse than we know.

on Clinton and the Generational Gender Divide

Um, I got Pell grants and low interest student loans during the Johnson administration. Those are old programs, like me. It's Bush who has destroyed these long standing programs.
