I am a divorced parent of a young child, and also grew up as a child of divorced parents. I know how it feels to have split parents that don't communicate at all. I had two Christmases every year.
For my son, I want him to know that both this parents will always be around and in his life. We do his birthday together, Halloween together, and even did a little vacation together this summer. He always spends Christmas Eve/Christmas with me, but this year we have invited his dad and his dad's new partner for dinner on Christmas day. Hopefully when he looks back as an adult, it will be a good memory of being surrounded by people who love him during the holidays.

on Rebirth of Local Journalism
Regardless of the method of delivery, or model of business, journalism seems to be on the outs with the public. Especially newspapers. Reading comments like Pinback's above, or most of the comments people post on OregonLive, it seems to me that people are very disenchanted (and even angry) with media providers. They can come up with new business models, new ways to deliver information, but if public perception and regard is so low, is there any way to save them?

on Unemployment: Regional Ripples
Like many Oregonians, I've been on the job hunt for months. I've sent out at least 70 resumes and applications this year, and have had only two interviews. I'm currently working as a temp, not in my field of study or expertise, but it's better than nothing.
I had heard that health care is an industry that was still doing ok. I applied for an OHSU job in November, and after two months of waiting, was finally informed that the job had been canceled due to the "global economic crisis."
